Luke chapter 2:41-49 reads as follow:
'Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
“Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s business?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them.'
What did Jesus mean by 'His Father's business'?
Jesus replied to his earthy parents by telling them that He was involved into his Father's Business.
Jesus was found in the middle of people discussing the Word of God in the Temple, and He called it 'His father's business'.
From this excerpt I can conclude that God's business is related to his Word, people and the church.
Everyday of our lives presents to us daily worries and tasks we feel obliged to attend to but Jesus said:
'But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.'
(Matthew 6:33)
Jesus calls you and I to focus on the business He came to take care of, and He even promised that our needs shall be taken care of.
These are the three components of God's business on Earth:
1. His Word:
Jesus was discussing, learning, and answering about the Word of God in the Temple. God's word is enclosed in the Bible and expressed through different mediums (preaching,prophecy,revelation,vision...). We have a duty to meditate on every Word God tells us and beyond listening, we have to obey and follow as well.
In Joshua 1:8, God commands us to keep His Word on our lips and to not let it depart from us.
Being involved with the Word of God means 'living according to what God says for our lives, living according to His will ( regarding our career, ministry, marriage and many other things...)and Jesus did the perfect will of God.
Being involved with the word involves confessing God's thinking ways when we face life.
2. Church:
The second component of God's business on Earth is the church. We have to keep ourselves in constant fellowship with the members of God's family and play our part as a member of the body by taking up a role fitting our gifts.
If you can teach, then teach,
If you can usher, then help in welcoming people...
Jesus was sitting with teachers of the Word. What is our relationship with the people holding authority in the church? Do we take time to seat with them and learn, discuss and ask questions?
There is no such thing as an 'isolated Christian' configured in God's plan.
3. People:
God gave His Son for people. He did not send Jesus for buildings, money and gold but for people. The life and ministry of Christ was centered around reaching out to humans who were imperfect, sinners, questionable, good, powerful, poor...Jesus was interested in everybody.
And as followers of Christ, we should constantly find opportunities to influence positively the lives of others whether at work,in our communities, neighborhood, and in many other places.
As the world becomes increasingly squeezed by bad social and economic torrents, life tends to get harder. People are hurting and need solutions. Every gift God has planted in you, were not meant to stay within you but to reach out to others.
Remember this: God's business on Earth= His Word (His will), the Church,People.
